Winter Heating Safety Checklist

Stay warm and safe this winter with our heating safety checklist—inspect systems, clean vents, and prevent fire hazards effectively.

Description

As southern Utah residents begin firing up wood stoves, space heaters, and furnaces, NWSSD reminds everyone that home heating equipment is a leading cause of house fires each winter. A few simple steps can drastically reduce your risk.

Winter Heating Safety Checklist
1. Inspect and Clean
Have chimneys, fireplaces, and heating systems inspected and cleaned by a qualified professional each year before use. Creosote buildup is a major cause of chimney fires.
  • Keep them 3 feet away from anything flammable.
  • Plug them directly into a wall outlet — no extension cords.
  • Turn them off when sleeping or leaving a room.
  • Buy models with tip-over and overheat protection.
Carbon monoxide poisoning increases in winter months. Test alarms monthly, replace batteries yearly, and replace the entire unit every 10 years.
Place ashes from fireplaces or stoves in a metal container with a lid. Store outside, away from decks and walls.
If you notice flickering lights, unusual smells, or excessive soot, stop using your heater and contact a professional.
