The holidays bring warmth, lights, and celebration — but also increased fire risks. Between Christmas trees, candles, and busy kitchens, December is one of the busiest months for firefighters.
Christmas Tree Safety
Choose a fresh tree with green needles that don’t fall easily.
Keep it at least 3 feet from heat sources.
Check water daily — a dry tree can ignite in seconds.
Dispose of it promptly after the holidays.
Lights and Decorations
Inspect light strings for frayed cords or loose bulbs. Only use UL-listed products and outdoor-rated lights where appropriate. Turn off all decorations before bed or leaving home.
Candle Safety
Use flameless candles whenever possible. If you do use real ones, place them in sturdy holders and keep them well away from decorations.
Kitchen Safety During Gatherings
With multiple dishes cooking at once, distractions are common. Keep an eye on the stove, set timers, and keep children away from hot surfaces.
