Description

Knowing how to respond in an emergency can save a life. The Northwestern Special Services District Fire Department encourages all residents to learn CPR and basic first aid.

CPR and First Aid Basics
CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)

If someone collapses and isn’t breathing:

  1. Call 911.
  2. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest — 100–120 compressions per minute (to the beat of “Stayin’ Alive”).
  3. If trained, provide rescue breaths after every 30 compressions.

If an AED (automated external defibrillator) is available, turn it on and follow the voice instructions immediately.

For adults and children, perform the Heimlich maneuver:

  • Stand behind the person, wrap your arms around their waist.
  • Make a fist just above the navel and thrust inward and upward until the obstruction clears.

For infants under one year, alternate five back blows and five chest compressions.

  • Bleeding: Apply direct pressure with a clean cloth.
  • Burns: Cool with clean running water for at least 10 minutes — never use ice.
  • Fractures: Immobilize and keep the injured area still until help arrives.
NWSSD regularly partners with local health agencies and schools to offer CPR certification classes. Follow department announcements for upcoming dates.
