Kitchen Safety

Cooking is the #1 cause of home fires among seniors.

  • Always stay in the kitchen while cooking.
  • Keep towels, paper products, and curtains away from burners.
  • Turn pot handles inward to prevent spills.
  • If a fire starts, turn off the burner and cover the pan — never use water on grease fires.
  • Replace damaged cords immediately.
  • Avoid overloading outlets.
  • Use extension cords only temporarily.
  • Have a licensed electrician check older wiring.

If mobility is limited, ensure at least one escape route is accessible without stairs. Consider keeping a phone near your bed and wearing a medical alert device.

Install bedroom smoke alarms with flashing lights or bed shakers for those with hearing impairments. NWSSD can assist with installation upon request.
