How To Create a Home Fire Escape Plan

Learn how to create a home fire escape plan to ensure your family’s safety with clear routes, meeting points, and drills.

Description

When a fire breaks out, every second counts. Smoke can fill a home in less than two minutes, making quick action essential. The Northwestern Special Services District Fire Department encourages all southern Utah families to create and practice a home fire escape plan — a simple but powerful way to save lives.

Home Fire Escape Plan
Step 1: Map Your Home
Start by drawing a floor plan of your home. Identify all doors and windows that could serve as escape routes. Every room should have two ways out — typically a door and a window. Mark each route clearly on the plan.
Select a safe outdoor location where everyone can gather after escaping — such as a neighbor’s mailbox, a large tree, or the end of your driveway. This helps firefighters know if everyone is accounted for.
Run escape drills at least twice a year. Practice during both day and night to simulate real conditions. Make it a family event — involve kids so they understand what to do and where to go.
Ensure every family member knows how to open windows and unlock doors quickly. Teach children not to hide under beds or in closets. If smoke is present, everyone should stay low and crawl under the smoke to safety.
Assign a helper for anyone who may need assistance, such as small children, elderly family members, or pets. If you live in a multi-story home, consider an escape ladder for upper-floor bedrooms.
Never re-enter a burning home. Call 911 from outside and let trained firefighters handle the rest.
